Emmett Benton hired a 'young go-getter' by the name of Eric Raymond to run his record company while he worked on the Synergy Machine. The guy was a total cliche' of a ruthless executive and vowed to make the record company the greatest success possible at any cost. To this end, he signs a group called the 'Misfits' whose 'hard-driving beat' he feels will usher in this success, and they are similarly intent to do whatever it takes to 'make it big'. Logic suggests that signing acts to make the company a profit is Mr. Raymond's JOB, and to whip up some hype he produces a 'Battle of the Bands' wherein the Misfits 'happen' to be the best band there. Objectively speaking, to all but the most obtuse of MORONS it's obviously just a publicity stunt to show off the Misfits, not a contest... Not yet.
Jerrica's foster home is in need of another infusion of funds, and so she goes to tap into the company's profits as if it were an ATM. Sadly, there's really no water in the well as Mr. Raymond's been trying to sign bands, produce records and make money, which is kind of hard to do on the treakling revenues from Jacqui Benton's (Jerrica's mom and ONLY act known to be signed to the company) old records, but he's making a go of it because it's his job. Never mind that 'rigged' or not, it's getting exposure not only for the Misfits but for the other acts involved, and if any of the other acts find a niche they'd doubtless be signed as well. That's generally considered a GOOD idea, and the cost of putting it all together and making sure the permits and such are in order has the company coffers pretty committed, with little or nothing to 'spare'.
He explains this to Jerrica, who has a hissy fit when he won't fork over the company's money to her on demand. She further decides that Eric isn't honoring the memory of her father because he's producing a 'rigged contest' and vows to stop him. Let's re-examine that. Because she doesn't like his methods, she vows to scuttle a project put together to make a SIGNED band more popular - a band signed to a company half HERS. I would think she'd want as many signed bands as successful as possible, but since SHE thinks it's really a contest she decides to torpedo the works.
Bottom line: Taking your company's money for your own use is called 'embezzlement' and illegal. Deciding someone doesn't 'deserve' to succeed and acting to sabotage them is widely considered as evil. Doing so when that success is ultimately to YOUR benefit is generally considered STUPID.
